The picture to the left is 40, 80, and 120 grit is to get the lathe lines out and make it smooth.
Sand paper is the last step on the lathe for making a bat. There's many different types of sand paper, there are classified in grits. 40 grit being the roughest all the way to 400 grit being the smoothest.
